(10/11-12/00): Spent some time on the Oil
sump... Its installed, and done, and should work great!
One
of the things I wanted to try, was to pull the nut off of the sixth stud, and put in
a longer one (I wanted a NO leak sump)... People said it couldn't be done,
so I decided to try it (WITHOUT cracking the case!)! The first thing was
to get that pesky nut off from INSIDE the case, that secures the oil
pickup. I took an old (cheapy) wrench, heated it with an Oxy-Acetylene
torch, bent it a little, and whala. This wrench fits perfectly right inside, to pull that darn
nut off of there.
Then, I went and got a long bolt, with the
same threads as the stud. It was a collared bolt, so I ran a die all the
way down it, and then cut the head off at the right length. Then I put it
in the case, and CAREFULLY put the washer/nut back on, and torqued it back down
to specs.
Then I used some special (and VERY
expensive) sealer: Called permatex's "the right stuff", (which is
HIGHLY recommended for this application)
Then I put the sump on. Now I have a long enough
6th stud, but guess what? The original nut will NOT fit, because the
wall of the sump interferes with the head of the nut.
After a trip to the machine shop,
this is what I came up with. Its a piece of hex stock, that I spun down,
so It would fit just right. The one on the left is a spacer, and the one
on the right is the actual nut (its tapped).
Here's what it looks like once its
been torqued. Now I have ALL 6 tightened (prolly one of the only VW sumps
around with all 6 tightened!!, haha).
Here's the sump... Its done, minus the oil pickup.
(No, I didn't use a flash in this pic... That my new Fluorescent workshop
lights).
Here's the Oil Pickup I machined. The one that came in the kit, was meant
to be used without the strainer, and I wanted to use the strainer; So I made my
own.
Here it is installed
Its getting closer, and closer! I REALLY need to wrap this sucker
up!!!!! I'm running out of time (and money). Right know I'm waiting
on a fanshroud to come in (hopefully it'll be here on Monday ), and then I can
bolt most of the rest of the stuff on! Stay tuned for part 23!
