Eric's Project - Part 41

(5/2/01):  I had planned on eventually getting a tach, so I finally did!  At first I was looking at a 5" tach with an external shift and warning light, but later decided it was to large and expensive for what I would use it for.  I decided on a nice 4" tach with an internal shift light - Its the VDO-333940 (black face/black housing, shift light) unit (I ordered it from summit racing).

This is what it looks like.  As you can see, it has a redline pointer (the orange one), AND an adjustable shiftlight (the red circle you see between the "5" and "6").  It came with a mount, which was perfect for my application!

This is where I decided to mount it.  Its in perfect view, and It doesn't block my view of anything.  I put it on the left side, because I plan to mount some other gauges on the right side!

There's a lot of reflection in the next couple pics, but this is what the tach looks like from outside:

Since my ignition system isn't stock (consists of a CDI, and Pertronix) I was curious to see if I would need the CDI adapter...  At first, I connected it to the coil "+" terminal, but it acted really wacky, so after an e-mail to John Connolly and then a few minutes to think about it, I hooked it up to the Pertronix (electronic ignition) black wire (trigger wire) = it works perfect!  Its a GREAT tach for the money, and perfect size for a superbeetle!  There is even *just*  enough space behind the tach for my sunshade to fit :-)  The illumination on it is really nice too!
