Eric's Summer Project - Part 27

(11/17/00):  Finally got some stuff done!  Got the valves adjusted, and the valve covers installed, Oh AND I got the fanshroud installed!!  And yes, it IS complete with the flaps & working thermostat, and the alternator (of course).

This is how I setup my valve covers.  First, I welded 4 small tabs to the longer sided of the seal channel (you can barely make out the top two.  The bottom two are exactly the same).  Then I put a generous coating of Permatex's "the right stuff" to the channel, and then installed a GOOD QUALITY (thick and dense) cork seal.  After that I installed them on a set of unused heads (my old ones), and let everything dry.  The next day, I pulled them off, and cut the excess sealer off with a razor.  And just today, I put a little bit of oil on the cork, and then installed them! (after I adjusted the valves).

I also finally got around to permanently installing the Type 4 oil cooler.  I ran to my local VW parts dealer, and picked up two longer Type 4 Oil cooler mounting studs (the old ones are too short for the larger t-4 cooler), and put in new seals, and installed it.  Then I put on a piece of weatherstripping, to make sure the air goes through the cooler, and not around it.

Once that was done, I installed the flaps into the fanshroud (NO MATTER what anyone tells you, you NEED those flaps in there.)  And then I mounted the alternator to the shroud, and then dropped everything in place.  Got the thermostat hooked up, and adjusted, and made sure all the bolts were tight.

The next thing to do, is to install and modify the exhaust, then install the carbs, manifolds & linkage.  Its getting CLOSER!!!!!!!

Stay tuned for part 28!
