Eric's Summer Project - Part 25

(10/22/00):  Time to modify for my type 4 oil cooler!  This is a neat little trick you can use to keep your engine running a little cooler.  Go an buy a replacement oil cooler, but instead of buying one for a t-1 (bug), buy one for a t-4 (they aren't available new, and they are a bit pricey, but worth it).  The advantage to the type 4 cooler is that it is LARGER than the original; Its only bigger by 2 passes, but that's enough to be significant.  Once you have the larger oil cooler, you have to modify the fanshroud to fit it.

Here's what the T-4 cooler looks like, since they aren't available new, you have to buy used, and bend out all the air "pockets" that have been smashed over the years. (no big deal).  As long as you can see light through each one, it'll be good enough.

New T-4 Unit:

The old Skinny T-1 That is being replaced:

Another thing I noticed is that One of my shrouds actually has an air scoop to route air to the cooler.  My other two don't.  I decided to use the one with the scoop for this project (makes since to have more air for my larger cooler).

No Scoop:

Scoop (the one I will be using):

The main modification for the T-4 oil cooler, is making the "bay" taller.  As you can see here, I cut the 'lid' of the shroud I was going to use as high as possible, then I cut another 'lid' off of another shroud I got from the junkyard, as low as possible.  After some measuring, and grinding, and cutting, I welded it right on. (the welds are finished in this pic, that Why they look 'rough')

Stay tuned for part 26, where who knows what I will do! :-)
