Eric's Summer Project - Part 15

(9/5-6/00):  Struggled finding an axle stub shaft, that was to my standards...  The wheel wobble that I have, ended up coming from a combination of the spacer, and the stub shaft.  I bought 3 spacers, and found the best one, then I went through 5 (YES, FIVE) stub shafts...  Only 1 was within the official service manual's specs.  Originally, before I started this 'resto' business, the right rear was sitting at around .040" (which is REALLY bad).  The bearings were a major contributor to this.  After the rebuild, I had about .016" which is definitely better, but not as good as I wanted.  After 5 stub shafts, and 3 spacers, I found ONE that got me to about .009"  The official service manual says anything under .010" is acceptable.  So I figured I'd go broke by the time I found I good one, so I'm keeping it 'as is' since its within specs.  The other side is sitting at .004 (which is VERY good).  Overall, I'm just glad its better than what it was.  After I got everything installed, I mounted up the wheels, and called the rear done!

Just a sampling of the stub shafts I went through...  They ranged from .009" to .027" (I'm using the .009, which is not pictured)

Got my (dirty) rims/tires on, you can see the nicely painted NEW drum behind it).

I hope my firestones don't fall apart :-)   Stay tuned for part 16!!
