Eric's Project - Part 70

(5/9/2004) - Quite a long time ago I ordered a double tube front Baja bumper for a standard beetle.  It of course didn't fit my car, but I liked the way it looked.  So I finally found the time to modify it so that it will fit.  Basically, I cut off all of the mounts that were already on it, and redesigned it.

The upper mounts were super easy to make.  I cut off the mounting flange on the stock bumper shocks (below) and welded them to some tubes that I welded onto the bumper.

The lower mounts go through the louvers in the front apron.  They bolt down right in front of the frame head (see pic towards bottom of page).  This seems to be a pretty strong setup, and it looks good.

I will also be adding another set of driving lights (some rectangular Hella's) - they will mount under the bumper about six inches outboard of the lower bumper mounts.

As of writing this, I have already had the bumper powdercoated "nebula black" to match my rear bumper.  Now I just need to install it and wire up the lights!
